NVQ Level 2 Formwork Qualification Structure

The NVQ Level 2 in Formwork (Construction) is designed for professionals with hands-on experience in formwork, shuttering, and temporary works, allowing them to demonstrate their competence in a real-world setting. Formwork NVQ Level 2 Units

Pathway 1 – Formwork Carpenter

Candidates must complete five mandatory units:

• Fabricating and maintaining timber and proprietary formwork systems in the workplace – Level 2
• Erecting and striking timber and proprietary formwork in the workplace – Level 2
• Conforming to general health, safety, and welfare in the workplace – Level 1
• Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace – Level 2
• Moving, handling, and storing resources in the workplace – Level 2

Pathway 2 – Formwork Erector and Striker

Candidates must complete five mandatory units:

• Erecting and striking timber and proprietary formwork in the workplace – Level 2
• Maintaining timber and proprietary formwork systems in the workplace – Level 2
• Conforming to general health, safety, and welfare in the workplace – Level 1
• Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace – Level 2
• Moving, handling, and storing resources in the workplace – Level 2

This qualification is entirely work-based, meaning there are no exams. Your skills will be assessed through real-world tasks, site observations, and a portfolio of evidence compiled during your work.

✔ Fabricating and maintaining timber and proprietary formwork
✔ Cutting, shaping, and assembling formwork panels and structures
✔ Installing and securing formwork for concrete pouring
✔ Using various saws and tools (circular, bench, jig, reciprocating, alligator saws)
✔ Applying protective coatings and securing tie systems

Best suited for: Professionals working on commercial and residential construction sites, infrastructure projects, and civil engineering works.

2. Formwork Erector and Striker

This pathway is focused on erecting and dismantling formwork systems efficiently and safely.

✔ Erecting and striking timber and proprietary formwork systems
✔ Ensuring stability and load-bearing capacity of formwork structures
✔ Working with climbing, jumping, slip form, and panel systems
✔ Using lifting equipment and securing heavy formwork sections
✔ Following health and safety regulations for site operations

Best suited for: Professionals involved in high-rise construction, bridgework, tunnel formwork, and large-scale infrastructure projects.

Qualification Structure & Career Progression
