NVQ Level 2 Plastering Qualification Structure

The NVQ Level 2 in Plastering (Construction) is designed for professionals with hands-on experience in plastering, solid plastering, and rendering, allowing them to demonstrate their competence in a real-world setting. This work-based qualification provides industry recognition and ensures that candidates meet the National Occupational Standards for plastering operations.

Plastering NVQ Level 2 Units

Pathway 1 – Solid Plastering

Candidates must complete five mandatory units:

• Applying solid plaster to background surfaces and producing finishes in the workplace – Level 2
• Conforming to general health, safety, and welfare in the workplace – Level 1
• Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace – Level 2
• Moving, handling, and storing resources in the workplace – Level 2
• Maintaining tools and equipment in the workplace – Level 2

Pathway 2 – Rendering

Candidates must complete five mandatory units:

• Applying external render to background surfaces and producing finishes in the workplace – Level 2
• Conforming to general health, safety, and welfare in the workplace – Level 1
• Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace – Level 2
• Moving, handling, and storing resources in the workplace – Level 2
• Maintaining tools and equipment in the workplace – Level 2

This qualification is entirely work-based, meaning there are no exams. Your skills will be assessed through real-world tasks, site observations, and a portfolio of evidence compiled during your work.

2. Plastering (Fibrous)

This pathway is designed for professionals working with decorative fibrous plaster components.

✔ Producing fibrous plaster components
✔ Positioning and securing fibrous plaster components
✔ Repairing fibrous plaster components

Best suited for: Plasterers involved in decorative and restoration work.

3. Heritage Plastering – Solid

This pathway focuses on traditional plastering techniques for conservation and restoration projects.

✔ Applying solid render and finishing plaster to heritage structures
✔ Working on conservation or restoration projects
✔ Producing traditional internal solid plastering finishes

Best suited for: Plasterers specialising in heritage building restoration and traditional techniques.

4. Heritage Plastering – Fibrous

This pathway covers advanced fibrous plastering skills applied to heritage and conservation projects.

✔ Producing and installing fibrous plaster components for heritage restoration
✔ Working on conservation or restoration projects
✔ Repairing historical plasterwork

Best suited for: Plasterers working on listed buildings, heritage sites, and historical restoration.

Qualification Structure & Career Progression
